Taxis are not the cheapest way to move around the Amalfi Coast. But there are days when comfort matters more than saving a few euros — an early flight, heavy bags, tired children, or four people sharing one car.
The good news is that Amalfi publishes official fixed taxi fares for many of the journeys visitors take most often, including Positano, Ravello, Sorrento, Pompeii, Salerno and Naples.
There is one small detail that catches people out: there is no single taxi tariff for the whole coast. Prices change depending on where the journey begins. Naples follows one set of fares, Amalfi another, while Sorrento, Salerno and other towns may use meters or separate quotes.
That is very Amalfi Coast, in a way. One road, many little towns, each with its own rhythm.
So rather than giving you one vague number, I’ll take you along the coast properly — from Naples, through Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, and on towards Salerno — with the prices that are actually useful when you are standing there with your bags in the sun.
How taxis work on the Amalfi Coast
Prices vary a lot. From Naples, the main fixed fares run from €70 to Pompeii up to €160 to Ravello. From Amalfi, popular routes range from about €40 to €170.
Naples and Amalfi are the easiest places to plan from. Both publish official fixed fares for many of the routes visitors use most.
Sorrento and Salerno work differently. Longer journeys are usually metered, so distance, traffic and waiting time can change the final price.
Always check the direction. Amalfi → Positano and Positano → Amalfi can have different fares, even though you are travelling the same route.
My tip: for airport days, luggage or four people travelling together, I often like the taxi. For a simple coastal day trip, I’d check the ferry first.
One thing to remember: ask whether the fare is fixed or metered before you leave. The guide below gives the actual fares, useful estimates and the small rules that can change what you pay.
Naples to Pompeii by taxi
If you’re arriving in Naples and want to visit Pompeii before continuing south, this is one of the easiest taxi prices to understand.
Naples publishes an official predetermined fare of €70 to Pompei Scavi, meaning the archaeological site. The price is per taxi rather than per passenger, so a group of three or four can make the journey surprisingly reasonable once the fare is divided between you.
The predetermined tariff already includes the usual radio-taxi call, night, holiday, luggage, animal and airport supplements. Motorway tolls and the €5 minivan supplement are not included. Most importantly, ask for the predetermined fare when the journey begins rather than assuming it will automatically be applied when you arrive.
If Pompeii is part of your travel day between Naples and the coast, a taxi can be especially convenient. You avoid carrying suitcases onto the Circumvesuviana and can continue towards Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast afterwards.
My tip: travelling with luggage? Sort out storage before you enter the archaeological site rather than arriving with everything still in your hands.
Source: Comune di Napoli official taxi tariff
Best for: groups and travellers with luggage.
Included: luggage, night, holiday and airport supplements.
Extra: motorway tolls and €5 minivan supplement if applicable.
Remember: ask for the fixed fare before the ride starts.
Naples to Sorrento by taxi
Naples has an official €125 fixed fare to Sorrento.
If you’re travelling alone, the train will usually make more sense. But with three or four people, luggage and a long journey behind you, a taxi can be a very comfortable way to start the trip.
You go straight from your pickup point in Naples to your hotel in Sorrento. No changing trains, carrying bags through stations or figuring out the Circumvesuviana when you have just landed.
The fare is per vehicle. Ask for the predetermined €125 tariff before you leave.
My tip: if you’re travelling as a group, divide the fare before comparing it with other options. For four people, it works out at about €31 each.
And if you’re actually heading to Positano, don’t stop your planning at Sorrento — Naples has an official fixed fare there too.

Naples to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello
This is where taking a taxi from Naples becomes much easier to plan.
Naples publishes official predetermined fares to three of the main Amalfi Coast destinations: €145 to Positano, €155 to Amalfi and €160 to Ravello.
The prices are per vehicle, one way, not per person. The usual night, holiday, luggage, radio-taxi and airport supplements are already included. Motorway tolls and the €5 minivan supplement are extra.
For a group, this can make more sense than it first appears. Split between four people, the fare works out at about €36 each to Positano, €39 each to Amalfi and €40 each to Ravello.
For smaller towns such as Praiano, Furore, Conca dei Marini, Atrani, Scala, Minori, Maiori, Tramonti, Cetara and Vietri sul Mare, Naples does not publish the same kind of fixed destination fare.
You can still take a taxi there, of course. It just means there is no single official number I would trust enough to present as “the price”.
My tip: for these smaller towns, ask for the expected total before leaving. A private transfer can also be a good option because the operator will usually give you a fixed quote in advance.
That quote is not the municipal Naples taxi tariff, but for a long coastal transfer, knowing the exact price before you get in can be useful.
| Destination | Fare per taxi |
|---|---|
| Positano | €145 |
| Amalfi | €155 |
| Ravello | €160 |
Sorrento to Positano and the Amalfi Coast
From Sorrento, taxi prices work a little differently.
There is no simple municipal list with one fixed price to Positano, Amalfi or Ravello. Regular taxis use the meter, so what you pay depends on the distance, traffic, waiting time and any extra charges.
The meter starts at €6. After that, the rate changes as the journey gets longer, and slow traffic is charged as waiting time. On the road towards Positano, that can make a real difference in July and August.
You will also find plenty of drivers offering a fixed price from Sorrento to the coast. These are usually private-transfer quotes rather than the municipal taxi tariff. They can still be a very good option, especially if you prefer knowing the full price before you leave.
For a normal taxi, I would simply ask for an estimated total before getting in — especially if you are continuing past Positano towards Praiano, Amalfi or Ravello.
My tip: in summer, compare the taxi estimate with a fixed private transfer and the ferry. For two people with light bags, the ferry can be hard to beat. For a family or group with luggage, paying for one car can make much more sense.
| Positano | €70–90 |
| Praiano | €95–115 |
| Amalfi | €125–150 |
| Minori | €135–165 |
| Maiori | €140–170 |
| Ravello | €145–175 |
Planning estimates only. Sorrento taxis are metered, so traffic and waiting time can increase the fare.
My tip: if you’re staying in Sorrento and heading to Positano or farther east, ask for an estimated total before getting in. Then compare it with a private transfer and the ferry. On a quiet day the taxi can make sense; in August traffic, knowing the fixed transfer price in advance can feel much nicer.
Salerno to Amalfi, Maiori, Positano and the coast
From Salerno, the taxi system is quite simple to understand.
For journeys outside the city, the published extra-urban tariff starts at €3.50 and then charges €2.50 per kilometre. Waiting time is €0.10 every 15 seconds, while night journeys add €4, holidays €2.50 and luggage €0.50 per piece.
That means you can make a fairly useful estimate before getting into the taxi.
For example, Cetara is only around 12 km from Salerno, while Positano is roughly 44 km by road. The farther west you travel along the coast, the more distance — and potentially traffic — starts to matter.
The prices in the table below are calculated from the published Salerno tariff and typical road distances. They are planning estimates, not fixed fares, so slow traffic or waiting time can push the final amount higher.
My tip: Salerno is especially convenient for the eastern side of the coast. For Vietri, Cetara, Maiori and Minori, I would compare the taxi with the ferry before deciding. For a group with luggage, one taxi can still be a very practical option.
Source: Radio Taxi Salerno tariff
| Vietri sul Mare | €25–35 |
| Cetara | €35–45 |
| Maiori | €60–75 |
| Minori | €65–80 |
| Amalfi | €65–80 |
| Ravello | €80–95 |
| Positano | €115–135 |
Planning estimates only. Salerno taxis use the extra-urban meter, so traffic and waiting time can increase the fare.
From Salerno, it’s always worth checking the ferry too. For Cetara, Maiori, Minori and Amalfi, the boat can be the easiest option in season.
If there are two of you with light luggage, I’d usually look at the ferry first. If you’re a family or group with suitcases, one taxi can be much more convenient.

Positano to Amalfi, Ravello, Sorrento, Naples and Salerno
From Positano, there are useful published prices for the main routes, but I would treat them as planning fares rather than guaranteed official prices.
For up to four people, the current published figures are around €120 to Amalfi, €150 to Ravello, €120 to central Sorrento, €130 to Sorrento port and €250 to Naples or Salerno. Praiano is cheaper, usually around €50–€70, depending on where exactly you are going.
These prices are especially helpful if you want a quick idea of what a taxi should cost before you ask the driver or your hotel to arrange one.
My tip: if your hotel is booking the taxi for you, ask for the final price first. Positano has many pickups on narrow or higher roads, so the exact location can matter.
| Destination | 1–4 | 5–8 |
|---|---|---|
| Praiano | €50–70 | €60–80 |
| Amalfi | €120 | €130 |
| Ravello | €150 | €170 |
| Sorrento | €120 | €130 |
| Naples | €250 | €300 |
| Salerno | €250 | €300 |

Amalfi to almost everywhere: the easiest fares on the coast
From Amalfi, taxi prices are much easier to understand.
The municipality publishes a proper fixed-fare list, so for most common routes you can check the price before you leave.
For 1–4 people, the main fares are:
→ Minori — €40
→ Maiori — €50
→ Conca dei Marini — €50
→ Ravello — €55
→ Scala — €55
→ Praiano — €60
→ Furore — €70
→ Positano — €90
→ Vietri sul Mare — €120
→ Salerno station — €130
→ Sorrento — €160
→ Pompeii — €160
→ Naples airport / Napoli Centrale — €170
That is why I like using Amalfi as the starting point when planning taxis. You know the fare in advance, and there is much less guessing.
My tip: for short trips like Ravello, Minori or Maiori, compare the taxi with the bus. For Positano, Sorrento or Naples, the fixed fare becomes much more useful — especially if you are travelling with luggage or splitting the cost between a few people.
Why Amalfi to Positano can cost less than Positano to Amalfi
This is one of those details that is easy to miss when planning.
Amalfi → Positano is €90 for up to four people.
Positano → Amalfi is published at around €120.
The reason is simple: taxi fares are set locally, so the price depends on where the journey begins.
You see the same pattern with Naples:
→ Naples → Amalfi: €155
→ Amalfi → Naples: €170
So when you compare prices, always check the route in the direction you will actually travel.
My tip: don’t assume the return journey will cost the same. On the Amalfi Coast, it often doesn’t.
One Amalfi taxi rule that is easy to miss
Amalfi’s fixed fares are based on where your journey starts.
For local pickups, the municipality divides Amalfi into three zones. For 1–4 passengers, Zone 1 is €20, Zone 2 is €30 and Zone 3 is €35. If you are taking one of the longer fixed-fare routes, starting from Zone 2 adds €10, while Zone 3 or Pogerola adds €15.
There is one more important detail: the fixed fare is for a direct journey. If you ask the driver to stop on the way or make a detour, the trip may be charged differently.
That includes photo stops.
My tip: if you want to stop at a viewpoint between Amalfi and Positano, mention it before you leave and agree on the price first.
Where to get a taxi in Amalfi
Amalfi’s main taxi rank is in Piazza Flavio Gioia, just outside the historic centre and right beside the town’s main transport area.
The Comune di Amalfi currently lists the Radio Taxi number as +39 089 872239. Città di Amalfi
That location is particularly handy because the ferries, SITA buses and taxis are all clustered around the waterfront. If you arrive in Amalfi and suddenly decide that carrying your luggage uphill was a terrible idea, you do not have far to look.

Taxi or private transfer?
A taxi and an NCC private transfer are two different services.
With a taxi, the fare follows the local municipal rules. An NCC transfer is booked in advance and usually comes with an agreed price for the whole journey.
A private transfer can be useful when you want something arranged from the start — airport pickup, a larger vehicle, several suitcases, a hotel high above the coast road or a stop along the way.
For a simple trip from Amalfi’s taxi rank, I would check the official taxi fare first.
When does paying for a taxi actually make sense?
For Amalfi → Positano, the taxi is €90. If there are two of you, I’d probably check the ferry first. If there are four of you with luggage, it’s €22.50 each and you’re taken straight from one place to the other.
The same applies from Naples. €155 to Amalfi is a lot for one person, but split between four it comes to about €38.75 each.
Personally, I’d use a taxi when it solves a real problem: an early flight, a hotel change, too much luggage, or four people travelling together.
For a simple day trip between Amalfi and Positano, I’d still choose the ferry whenever the timetable works.
A few things I’d tell a friend before taking a taxi here
🚕 Ask whether it is fixed or metered before leaving. That one question avoids most confusion.
↔️ Check the direction of the fare. Amalfi → Positano is not automatically the same price as Positano → Amalfi.
👨👩👧👦 Think per vehicle, not per person. A fare that looks expensive for one traveller can become perfectly reasonable for four.
📸 Mention scenic stops before you set off. Particularly from Amalfi, where leaving the direct route can change how the ride is charged.
🚦 A taxi does not remove traffic. You are still travelling on the SS163, and a beautifully empty Google Maps screenshot at midnight is not July at noon.
🧳 Use taxis when they remove real hassle. Airports, train connections and changing hotels are where I would spend the money.
⛴️ Check the sea route too. Amalfi, Positano, Maiori and Salerno are very different journeys when the ferries are running.

Which taxi option is right for you?
There isn’t one taxi price for the whole Amalfi Coast. It depends on where you start.
From Naples, the main fixed fares are easy to check: €70 to Pompeii, €125 to Sorrento, €145 to Positano, €155 to Amalfi and €160 to Ravello.
From Sorrento, taxis usually run on the meter, so ask for an estimate before a longer trip.
From Salerno, the extra-urban tariff is based on distance, which makes it fairly easy to get a rough idea of the cost.
From Positano, use the published fares as a guide and confirm the price before leaving.
From Amalfi, things are simplest: the municipality publishes fixed fares for most of the routes visitors actually use.
And I wouldn’t automatically take a taxi just because it looks quickest. If the ferry is running and you’re travelling light, I’d often choose the boat. If it’s 6am, raining, you have four suitcases and a flight to catch, I’d happily take the taxi.
My tip: choose the option that makes that particular journey easier. On this coast, that can change from one day to the next.
The pricing system changes depending on where your journey starts. Here is the simplest way to read it.
The easiest starting point for fixed prices: €145 to Positano, €155 to Amalfi and €160 to Ravello.
Regular taxis use the meter. Ask for an estimated total before a longer journey.
Extra-urban journeys use a €3.50 start + €2.50 per kilometre.
Published fares are useful for planning, but confirm the final price before leaving.
The clearest system on the coast: official fixed fares cover most popular destinations.
