The best beach on the Amalfi Coast is not necessarily the one you’ve seen most often on Instagram.
Positano’s Spiaggia Grande has the famous view. Maiori gives you space. Gavitella keeps the sun longer into the evening. Duoglio rewards you with beautiful water after a serious descent. Marina di Praia feels almost hidden between cliffs despite being surprisingly close to the coastal road.
And that is the important thing to understand before planning a beach day here: Amalfi Coast beaches are very different from one another.
The coastline is steep and rocky, so many beaches are small pebble coves squeezed between cliffs rather than long stretches of sand. Some sit directly beside a town and ferry port. Others involve hundreds of stairs, a boat transfer or careful planning around public transport. Italia.it describes the coast’s beaches as relatively small because of the dramatic terrain, with pebble stretches appearing between the cliffs.
This guide compares the beaches that are actually worth considering — from Positano to Vietri sul Mare — based on swimming, scenery, access, atmosphere, space and the type of traveller each beach suits.
Quick answer
Which Amalfi Coast beach should you choose?
No universal winner here. Pick your beach by the kind of day you actually want — easy, beautiful, swim-heavy or sunset-first.
Pick your beach
Best Amalfi Coast beaches at a glance
Six very different beach days. Choose what matters most, then plan the logistics around it.
Fornillo
Positano looks, less Spiaggia Grande chaos. The one we’d choose for an actual beach day.
Maiori
More room, fewer stairs and far less logistical drama when everyone just wants to swim.
Duoglio
Beautiful water below the cliffs. Getting down takes effort; getting in is the reward.
Gavitella
Praiano’s late-light specialist. Come later, swim longer and let sunset do the rest.
Fiordo di Furore
Tiny beach, giant scenery. Better for a memorable swim than eight hours under an umbrella.
Spiaggia Grande
Yes, this is the Positano shot. Come for the view, swim once, then decide if you really want to stay.
1. Fornillo Beach, Positano
Best overall beach on the Amalfi Coast
If we had to recommend just one beach for most first-time visitors, Fornillo would be our choice.
You still get Positano’s cliffs, colourful buildings and Mediterranean atmosphere, but it feels more like somewhere to spend a beach day than somewhere everyone has stopped to take the same photograph.
Fornillo sits around the headland from Spiaggia Grande and can be reached on foot from central Positano.
That makes it unusually convenient by Amalfi Coast standards.
There are organised beach areas as well as public space, restaurants nearby and enough activity to avoid feeling isolated without the constant movement of Positano’s main waterfront.
The local Positano guide on Positano.com also describes Fornillo as the quieter alternative to Marina Grande.
Stay here when: you want the Positano experience without spending the entire day in the busiest part of Positano.
Choose another beach when: you need lots of open space, sandy shoreline or extremely easy access with young children.
amalfimap.com verdict: The smartest Positano beach for most travellers.

2. Maiori Beach
Best Amalfi Coast beach for families
Maiori is the practical answer to a problem many visitors only discover after arriving: a beautiful Amalfi Coast beach is not automatically an easy beach.
Maiori has one of the longest stretches of shoreline on the coast and sits directly beside a comparatively flat town. That means more space, fewer stairs and much easier access to cafés, restaurants and accommodation than at many smaller coves.
For families, that difference is significant. You can reach the beach without turning the day into a logistical exercise, and there is enough shoreline to give you more choice between organised beach clubs and public areas.
The trade-off is scenery. Maiori does not have the dramatic vertical backdrop of Positano or Fiordo di Furore, but it is far easier to actually use as a beach destination.
If you’re deciding whether Maiori could work as your base, our where to stay on the Amalfi Coast guide compares it with Positano, Amalfi, Minori and the other main towns.
Stay here when: you’re travelling with children, want a proper full beach day or simply prefer easy access over hundreds of stairs.
Choose another beach when: dramatic scenery matters more than space and convenience.
amalfimap.com verdict: Probably the easiest proper beach day on the Amalfi Coast.
3. Gavitella Beach, Praiano
Best Amalfi Coast beach for sunset
Gavitella has something many Amalfi Coast beaches lose surprisingly early: late-afternoon sun.
The beach sits below Praiano with open views toward Positano, the Li Galli islands and the western coastline. While cliffs push several nearby beaches into shade earlier in the day, Gavitella is one of the better places to stay by the water into the afternoon and toward sunset.
That makes it less of an early-morning beach and more of a place to arrive later, swim, slow down and stay for the light.
The catch is access.
Getting down from Praiano involves a long staircase, and the climb back up feels considerably different after several hours in the sun. If you have mobility concerns, young children or lots of beach gear, check your access plan before committing.
Boat access can make Gavitella dramatically easier.
For reaching Praiano and other beaches without relying on a car, see our Amalfi Coast transport guide.
Stay here when: you want afternoon sun, swimming and one of the coast’s best sunset settings.
Choose another beach when: stairs are a problem or effortless access matters more than the view.
amalfimap.com verdict: One of the best beaches on the coast for a late swim followed by sunset.
4. Duoglio Beach, Amalfi
Best beach for swimming
Duoglio sits just west of Amalfi beneath the coastal road.
The beach is relatively small, but the water and setting make it one of our favourite choices when swimming is the main reason you’re going to the beach.
The problem is access.
From the road, you descend a substantial staircase to reach the shoreline. Seasonal boat access can make the experience far easier.
That extra effort also helps separate Duoglio from the constant flow of people moving around central Amalfi.
Go earlier rather than later if you want maximum sun, as the surrounding terrain affects how quickly shade reaches the beach.
Stay here when: you’re willing to trade convenience for a better swimming experience.
Choose another beach when: accessibility is your priority.
amalfimap.com verdict: One of the few beaches where we’d say the extra effort is genuinely worth it.

5. Marina di Praia, Praiano
Best for swimming and lunch
Marina di Praia is squeezed between high cliffs at the bottom of a narrow inlet.
It feels dramatically enclosed, almost like a tiny natural harbour.
The beach itself is not large, so don’t arrive expecting the type of place where everyone spreads out for an entire day.
Instead, use Marina di Praia differently.
Swim.
Walk around the small harbour.
Have a long lunch.
Watch the boats.
Then continue your day.
The side road leading down from the SS163 makes access more straightforward than at many of Praiano’s stair-heavy beaches.
Stay here when: you want a beautiful half-day rather than a traditional all-day beach.
Choose another beach when: you want lots of shoreline or uninterrupted sun.
amalfimap.com verdict: One of the coast’s best lunch-and-swim combinations.

Choose by travel style
Find your beach in 10 seconds
Start with what actually matters to you instead of choosing whichever beach photograph appears first on Google.
Maiori or Minori
Both make it easy to move between town and beach without turning the day into a workout.
Fornillo
The strongest balance between scenery, convenience and actually enjoying the beach.
Duoglio
Worth the extra effort when the water matters more than easy access.
Gavitella
One of the coast’s strongest choices for late-afternoon light.
Maiori
More beach, easier access and fewer logistical compromises.
Fiordo di Furore
Go for the extraordinary setting rather than the size of the beach.
6. Spiaggia Grande, Positano
Best for the classic Positano view
If you have never been to Positano before, you should see Spiaggia Grande.
The town rises almost vertically behind the shoreline. Restaurants line the waterfront. Ferries and boats move constantly through the bay.
This is the Amalfi Coast image most people already know before arriving.
It is also exactly why the beach gets busy.
Spiaggia Grande works brilliantly as part of a Positano day: arrive, swim, enjoy the view, have lunch and explore the town.
But we would not automatically choose it for six uninterrupted hours on a lounger.
Stay here when: you want the classic Positano experience.
Choose another beach when: you want something quieter.
amalfimap.com verdict: See it once. Then walk to Fornillo.

7. Fiordo di Furore
Most dramatic beach on the Amalfi Coast
Fiordo di Furore barely looks real from the road above.
A narrow gorge cuts into the cliffs. The coastal bridge passes overhead. At the bottom sits a tiny pebble beach surrounded by rock walls and old seaside buildings.
It is one of the most memorable locations on the Amalfi Coast.
But here is the distinction that many beach guides miss:
Fiordo di Furore is one of the coast’s best places to visit. It is not necessarily one of its best places to spend an entire beach day.
The shoreline is small.
The cliffs reduce the hours of direct sun.
Parking around the fjord is extremely difficult, so arriving by car requires proper planning rather than improvisation.
If you’re thinking about reaching beaches by rental car, read our Amalfi Coast driving restrictions 2026 guide before building the day around the SS163.
Stay here when: you want a memorable swim and extraordinary scenery.
Choose another beach when: you need space, easy facilities or a relaxed full day.
amalfimap.com verdict: Go, swim, appreciate the setting — then continue exploring.

8. Atrani Beach
Best beach and village combination
Atrani sits almost beside Amalfi, yet it feels completely different.
The beach is directly in front of the village, with the road separating the shoreline from a maze of narrow streets and small piazzas.
That gives you one of the easiest combinations on the coast:
beach + lunch + village exploration without needing another bus or ferry.
Atrani is especially useful if you’re staying in Amalfi but want to change atmosphere for part of the day.
You can easily combine the two towns on foot.
Stay here when: you want the beach to be part of a broader day rather than the only activity.
Choose another beach when: you want lots of space or a resort-style beach club.
amalfimap.com verdict: One of the coast’s easiest places to enjoy without overplanning it.

9. Arienzo Beach, Positano
Best Positano beach for a full beach-club day
Arienzo sits outside central Positano and is reached either by a substantial staircase or by boat depending on where you’re going.
That separation from the centre changes the atmosphere.
This is somewhere we would choose deliberately when the beach is the main event of the day.
Book the setup you want, arrive, swim, eat and stay.
Don’t combine Arienzo with a five-town sightseeing marathon.
The location also benefits from good afternoon exposure compared with many cliff-backed coves.
Stay here when: you want a polished beach day near Positano.
Choose another beach when: you’re only looking for a quick swim between sightseeing stops.
amalfimap.com verdict: Better as a destination than an itinerary add-on.
10. Minori Beach
Best relaxed beach town
Minori is one of those places that becomes more appealing once you understand how inconvenient the Amalfi Coast can be.
The beach sits right beside the town.
Restaurants are close.
The waterfront is easy to walk.
You can actually move between your accommodation, breakfast, the beach and dinner without organising every transition.
Maiori has more shoreline.
Minori feels more compact.
If you are choosing a base for several days and want the beach to be part of normal daily life rather than a special excursion, that distinction matters.
Stay here when: you value ease, food and a compact town.
Choose another beach when: Positano-style scenery is the main priority.
amalfimap.com verdict: Quietly one of the most usable beach bases on the coast.

11. Marina Grande, Amalfi
Best beach if you’re staying in Amalfi
Amalfi’s main beach wins on one metric that matters enormously here:
convenience.
The historic centre is immediately behind you.
The ferry pier is nearby.
Restaurants and transport are close.
You can visit Amalfi, swim and continue elsewhere without adding a complicated journey to the day.
The beach itself is busy in peak summer and is not the most spectacular swimming spot in this guide.
But convenience on the Amalfi Coast has real value.
Stay here when: you’re already in Amalfi and want an easy swim.
Choose another beach when: you’re travelling specifically for the beach itself.
amalfimap.com verdict: Not the coast’s best beach. Possibly the coast’s easiest useful beach.
One map. Less chaos.
We’re mapping the Amalfi Coast properly.
Beaches, ferries, buses, parking and the small details that usually take 20 tabs to figure out.
Get the map when it’s ready
We’ll send you the map when it’s ready.
12. Laurito Beach, Positano
Best tiny Positano cove
Laurito is smaller and more secluded than Positano’s better-known beaches.
That is both the attraction and the limitation.
This is not somewhere to arrive without thinking and assume there will be unlimited space.
Laurito works best when you deliberately choose a small-cove experience and understand how you’re getting there and back.
Stay here when: you want something more intimate than central Positano.
Choose another beach when: you want maximum flexibility and plenty of public shoreline.
amalfimap.com verdict: Not for everyone — which is exactly why some travellers love it.
13. Erchie Beach
Best small-village beach east of Maiori
The eastern side of the Amalfi Coast is often ignored by visitors who stop exploring once they reach Amalfi.
That is a mistake.
Erchie sits between Maiori and Cetara in a small bay framed by steep terrain.
The atmosphere feels more local and less focused on international sightseeing than Positano or Amalfi.
It makes particular sense if you’re already staying around Maiori, Minori, Cetara or Salerno.
Stay here when: you want a smaller village beach and don’t need major attractions around you.
Choose another beach when: your itinerary is concentrated around Positano and Praiano.
amalfimap.com verdict: A good second- or third-beach-day choice once you’ve seen the famous west.

14. Cetara Beach
Best beach for food lovers
Cetara deserves more than a rushed stop.
The fishing village is famous for anchovies, tuna and colatura di alici, and the restaurants alone are enough reason to build part of a day around the town.
That changes how we would use the beach.
Don’t come only to lie down for eight hours.
Swim in the morning.
Walk through Cetara.
Have a proper lunch.
Return to the water.
The experience works because the beach and village belong together.
Stay here when: food and local atmosphere matter as much as swimming.
Choose another beach when: you want the biggest possible shoreline.
amalfimap.com verdict: One of the coast’s best complete days, even if the beach itself isn’t the headline act.
15. La Baia, Vietri sul Mare
Best option for space near Salerno
By the time you reach Vietri sul Mare, the coastline begins to feel different.
Beaches are generally broader and more accessible than the tiny coves farther west.
La Baia is a useful option if you’re prioritising space, relatively easy access or travelling with children.
It doesn’t deliver the same cliff-and-village drama as Positano.
But not every beach day needs to.
Stay here when: practicality matters more than postcard scenery.
Choose another beach when: you only have one Amalfi Coast beach day and want maximum visual impact.
amalfimap.com verdict: Useful rather than iconic — and sometimes useful is exactly what you need.
16. La Crespella, Vietri sul Mare
Best Vietri beach for scenery
If you want to stay around Vietri but prefer a smaller and more distinctive setting, La Crespella is the more interesting option.
The offshore rocks and historic coastal architecture give it more visual character than some of the larger nearby beaches.
It still benefits from being on the easier eastern side of the Amalfi Coast.
Stay here when: you want a scenic beach near Vietri without travelling west toward Amalfi or Positano.
Choose another beach when: maximum space matters more.
amalfimap.com verdict: Our prettier Vietri choice.
17. Marina di Vietri
Best easy beach day from Salerno
Marina di Vietri makes particular sense for travellers staying in Salerno or arriving from outside the coast.
You avoid driving or riding through the entire SS163 just to get into the water.
The waterfront is broader than many western Amalfi Coast beaches, and Vietri gives you cafés, ceramics, restaurants and town life nearby.
Would we cross the entire Amalfi Coast just for this beach?
Probably not.
Would we use it when staying in Salerno?
Absolutely.
Stay here when: your itinerary is based around Salerno or the eastern coast.
Choose another beach when: you want the quintessential Positano-style landscape.
amalfimap.com verdict: A strategically excellent beach rather than a bucket-list one.

Access reality check
On the Amalfi Coast, “nearby” can still be a mission.
A beach may sit directly below the road and still require 300 steps, a boat ride or a parking strategy worthy of a small military operation.
Down is easy. Back up is the problem.
Beaches like Gavitella, Arienzo and Duoglio can involve hundreds of steps. Factor in the climb back before committing.
See the beach? Great. Parking is another story.
A spot beside the SS163 does not mean there is legal or useful parking anywhere nearby. Never improvise this part.
Sometimes the sea is the shortcut.
A frustrating beach from land can become an effortless stop by boat. Check water access before writing a beach off.
Which Amalfi Coast beach should you choose?
The easiest mistake is choosing based entirely on photographs.
Choose based on where you’re staying and how you actually want to spend the day.
If you’re staying in Positano
Choose Fornillo for the best overall balance.
Use Spiaggia Grande for the famous view and central Positano experience.
Choose Arienzo when you want the beach to be the main event.
If you’re staying in Praiano
Choose Gavitella for afternoon light and sunset.
Choose Marina di Praia when you want to combine swimming with lunch and a small marina atmosphere.
If you’re staying in Amalfi
Use Marina Grande when convenience matters.
Choose Duoglio when you’re prepared to work harder for a better swimming experience.
Walk to Atrani when you want an easy change of atmosphere.
If you’re travelling with children
Start with Maiori.
Minori and the beaches around Vietri can also make far more sense than squeezing a family onto a tiny cove reached by hundreds of stairs.
If you’re travelling without a car
Prioritise beaches attached directly to towns.
Positano, Amalfi, Atrani, Minori and Maiori are much easier to integrate into a public-transport itinerary than isolated coves along the SS163.
Before choosing a base, read our where to stay on the Amalfi Coast guide.
🚌 Planning without a car? See our complete Amalfi Coast transport guide for ferries, buses, trains, taxis and transfers.
Are Amalfi Coast beaches sandy?
Mostly, no.
The coast’s steep geography means many beaches are made from pebbles, gravel or coarse sand rather than the long soft-sand shoreline you might associate with other parts of southern Italy.
That is not necessarily a disadvantage.
Pebble beaches often mean beautifully clear water and less sand following you back to the hotel.
But if soft sand is important to your trip, the Amalfi Coast may not match the image you have in mind.
Maiori and several beaches around Vietri are among the better options when you want broader and sandier shoreline.
Water shoes are useful if you dislike walking over pebbles.
Know before you pay
Free beach or beach club?
Spiaggia libera
A public section of beach. Bring your own towel and use the shoreline without paying for a lounger. On famous beaches, these sections may be small and can fill quickly in summer.
Stabilimento / lido
An organised beach club with paid loungers, umbrellas and usually additional services. It makes most sense when you genuinely plan to spend several hours or the entire day there.
Our rule is simple:
Don’t pay for an all-day beach setup just because you’ve arrived at a beach club.
If you’re stopping for a swim between towns, use a free section where available.
Save the proper beach-club day for somewhere you genuinely want to stay.
What to know before planning an Amalfi Coast beach day
Arrive earlier than you think
Many of the coast’s most famous beaches have very little physical space.
A difference of one or two hours can completely change the experience in July and August.
Morning is particularly valuable at small coves.
Check when the beach loses the sun
A beach can look perfectly south-facing on a map and still lose direct sunlight early because of the cliffs surrounding it.
This matters far more on the Amalfi Coast than on a flat seaside resort.
If late sun matters, choose accordingly.
Gavitella is one of the better late-afternoon options.
Consider the return journey, not only the descent
A long staircase rarely feels intimidating while you’re walking downhill toward blue water.
Climbing back in summer heat after lunch is a different calculation.
If stairs matter, check access before committing to Arienzo, Gavitella, Duoglio or other cliff-backed beaches.
Don’t automatically rent a car for beach hopping
A car gives you freedom only when there is somewhere useful to leave it.
On parts of the Amalfi Coast, parking near a beach can be harder than reaching the town by bus or ferry.
Our 2026 driving restrictions guide is worth reading before planning several beaches by car.
Use ferries and boats strategically
Water transport is not only about travelling between towns.
Approaching the coast from the sea can completely change how easy certain beaches are to reach.
A beach that feels inconvenient from the SS163 may be an effortless stop by boat.
Don’t try to collect beaches
Three carefully chosen beaches will usually give you a better trip than trying to visit eight.
Pick beaches with different personalities.
For example:
Fornillo for Positano.
Maiori for space.
Gavitella for sunset.
That already gives you three completely different versions of the Amalfi Coast.
The shortlist
If we were planning your trip
Fornillo
The strongest balance of scenery, access and atmosphere for a first Amalfi Coast trip.
Add Maiori
Experience the completely different, wider and more practical eastern side of the coast.
Add Gavitella
Finish with a smaller dramatic beach and one of the coast’s strongest late-afternoon settings.
Our favourite Amalfi Coast beaches
If you have only one beach day, choose Fornillo.
If you’re travelling with children, choose Maiori.
If swimming matters most, choose Duoglio.
If you want the classic Positano photograph, go to Spiaggia Grande.
If you want sunset, go to Gavitella.
If you want the most dramatic setting, visit Fiordo di Furore.
If you’re based in Amalfi and don’t want unnecessary logistics, use Marina Grande or walk to Atrani.
If you’re staying around Salerno, don’t automatically spend half the day travelling west. Vietri and the eastern coast can make far more sense.
The best beach on the Amalfi Coast is ultimately the one that works with your base, your transport and the type of day you want.
Frequently asked questions about Amalfi Coast beaches
What is the best beach on the Amalfi Coast?
For most travellers, we recommend Fornillo Beach in Positano.
It combines classic Amalfi Coast scenery with straightforward access and a generally calmer atmosphere than Spiaggia Grande.
Maiori is better for families, Duoglio for swimming and Gavitella for sunset.
What is the best beach in Positano?
Fornillo is our favourite overall.
Spiaggia Grande has the most famous view, while Arienzo is a stronger choice if you want to spend most of the day at a beach club.
Does the Amalfi Coast have sandy beaches?
Yes, but many Amalfi Coast beaches are predominantly pebbly, gravelly or made from coarse sand.
Maiori and the Vietri area are among the better options if you want a broader, sandier shoreline.
What is the best Amalfi Coast beach for families?
Maiori.
The town is relatively flat, the shoreline is long and the beach is much easier to access than many smaller cliff-backed coves.
Minori is another good option.
What is the most beautiful beach on the Amalfi Coast?
For pure drama, Fiordo di Furore is difficult to beat.
For the classic town-above-the-sea view, choose Spiaggia Grande in Positano.
For sunset, choose Gavitella in Praiano.
Are there free beaches on the Amalfi Coast?
Yes.
Many beaches have a spiaggia libera, or public free section, alongside paid beach clubs.
Free areas can be small on the most popular beaches and may fill quickly during peak summer.
Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast?
Yes.
Swimming is one of the best ways to experience the coastline, and many beaches have beautifully clear water.
Because the shoreline is often pebbly, water shoes can make entering and leaving the sea more comfortable.
Which Amalfi Coast beach has the easiest access?
Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Amalfi’s Marina Grande and Positano’s Spiaggia Grande are among the easiest choices because the shoreline sits directly beside the town.
Which Amalfi Coast beach is best without a car?
Maiori, Minori, Amalfi, Atrani and Positano are all practical choices because they combine beaches with towns and public transport.
The best option still depends on where you’re staying.
